Strategic Planning Sees New Progress
Mary Beth Carroll, Board Chair; and Mark Scheffler, Executive Director

Nonprofit guru Peter Drucker said the function of strategy is to “convert mission and objectives into performance.” Drucker also noted that “improving what we already do well” is just as important as developing new initiatives.

Leadership Akron’s Strategic Planning Committee has taken these insights to heart. Chaired by the Akron Beacon Journal’s Michael Douglas '98, the committee focused on strengthening the core program. Combining earlier strategic planning results and current perspectives of alumni, trustees, and other leaders, the committee identified four overall goals for the program. These program goals define success for a graduating class member. The goals are to:

  • Educate - Class members will gain a new understanding of the various sectors of the greater Akron community and the key organizations, people, and issues in each sector. Through these experiences, class members will also advance their understanding and practice of leadership.

  • Serve - Class members will develop an ethic of service that exceeds personal interest and they will aspire to help others through community involvement.

  • Inspire - Class members will become more effectively involved in the community than they were upon selection for Leadership Akron.

  • Exemplify - Class members will take responsibility for modeling the importance of community service, causing others in their organizations/ networks to become involved.

Many Leadership Akron graduates embody these actions. Articulating the goals will guide sustainable continuous program improvement.

The committee is currently convening Program Day Chairs—key players in the work of the program—to gather their insights and ideas. With help from the Community Leadership Association, they have also identified programs across the country that will offer ideas to advance these goals.

If you have ideas on how we can make the program even better, we hope you will share those with us as well. The committee will use these and other ideas to identify adjustments to the program for improved performance on these goals.

Timing Adds Poignancy to Media Day
Marie Covington '85

Rick Kavenagh, Jim Stonkus, and Unhee Kim share their vision for the front pageWith the prophetic theme “The Changing Media Market,” Media Day took place two days after the Akron Beacon Journal was put up for sale. Among the points made by co-chairs Michael Douglas '98 and Ron Kopp '87 – and a variety of speakers – were these:

  • Editors struggle to balance the liveliness readers say they want with a reasoned approach

  • In a free press, some irresponsibility is inevitable

  • Newspapers may not be the primary news source in the future, but there will always be a need for intelligent news gathering.

Beacon Journal sportswriter Terry Pluto shares his insightsClass members asked lively questions – and complained about past stories – proving almost no one is completely happy with stories done on them. “We’re not in the image business,” Beacon Journal editor Debra Adams Simmons reminded.

The afternoon session exposed the class to the brave new world of blogs, which bring less formality, but interactivity. Terry Pluto punctuated the day with insights on his life as a writer and the people he covers as a columnist.

Marie Covington attended Media Day as an alumni observer and “reporter” for the LeaderLine.

Junior Leadership Akron
First Amendment Takes Center Stage
Marija Tesla, Coventry High School

On February 14, the Junior Leadership class embarked on a mission to learn more about law, and on March 14 they had the same eagerness to learn more about media. During the course of Justice Day all students were asked to keep in mind three questions posed by J. Dean Carro, a Professor at The University of Akron School of Law. As we visited the Municipal Court, Summit County Jail, and the Akron Police Station, we considered: Who runs it? What does it do? Why is it important? On both Justice Day and Media Day, discussion of the First Amendment took center stage. In particular, on Media Day Jan Leach '99 lead a very interesting discussion on freedom of expression, including questions about flag burning. Overall, we learned new things, left our comfort zone and made everlasting memories.

Behind the Bricks and Mortar … The Real Work of Changing Our Neighborhoods”
Cheryl Urban '99

Everywhere you look, new building is taking place around the Akron community. But there is more to the story than the physical buildings. There are also grassroots efforts to change people’s lives and how they live.

The forum, held at Marion Hall Community Center in the Edgewood Homes neighborhood, was attended by about 50 alumni. They heard updates on a variety of community initiatives that incorporate not only new buildings and landscapes, but impact lives of residents with services to increase their self-sufficiency. Featured projects included AMHA’s Hope VI initiative and the University Park Alliance. Robert DeJournett ’05 gave a powerful recount of his experience in public housing.

Presenters included: Tony O’Leary '98, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority; Ken Stapleton '04, University Park Alliance of The University of Akron; Robert DeJournett '05, Summa Health System; and Jeff Wilhite '91, Deputy Director of Planning, The City of Akron.

Core Program - How Health Care Day has Changed
Joseph Coleman '88

On Health Care Day 2006, Class XXII encountered many issues related to accessible health care in our community. They spent the morning at Visiting Nurse Hospice. Three doctors presented a case study involving a former patient whose family was faced with a life and death ethical decision. Several Class XXII members role played various parts related to the situation, and unearthed the multiple angles in a difficult ethical choice.

Class XXII also learned that health care costs now dominate federal and state budgets. Area hospital CEOs and executives presented their views on how to deliver health care.

Since my participation in the class, Health Care Day has changed. In 1988, The William Considine Professional Building did not exist, nor had the Visiting Nurse Hospice Center become a reality. At that time, health care cost did not dominate the landscape—indeed, times have changed.

Leadership Development Explores New Territories
Laurie Zuckerman '91

In February, 25 alumni gathered to hear how to become a Leader as Pioneer: Exploring New Territories OUT of Your Comfort Zone. Speaker Tom Sudow, Executive Director of the Beachwood Chamber of Commerce, encouraged attendees to: 1) get away from pre-conceived notions, 2) identify where you are in the lifecycle of a project, product, etc., and 3) make change early to stay ahead of the curve. Mr. Sudow also advocated for regionalism in Northeast Ohio, and invited us to get out of our comfort zones and create a regional network built on trust and honesty.
