Mike McGlinchy '05 Your LAAA is hard at work! 140 members attended the Annual Meeting in August where we welcomed Class XXIV members into LAAA. We also heard highlights of our 2007-08 program including committee-led events, Junior Leadership Akron, and the Distinguished Leader Award. New Board members Horace Highland ’07, Bernie Rochford ’04 and Kevin Thomas ’08 were elected. After the meeting the new LAAA officers were elected: President Mike McGlinchy ’05, Vice President Bernie Rochford, ‘04, Secretary Danny Zampelli ’06 and Treasurer Jim Rollins ’05. Also please remember the members of our LAAA family that died over the last two years: Barbara Hiney (a Founder and Life Trustee of the program), Becky Gilliam ’93, Sue Pavloff ’05, David Myers ’92 and Sandra Stubbs-Pitts ’88. Also at the Annual Meeting, Leadership Akron Board Chair Riley Lochridge ’86 talked about the strength of Leadership Akron and its bright future, including new programs and outreach. That growth requires additional resources and a reliable revenue stream, which Phil Maynard (Endowment Co-Chair with Roger Read) explained through the Endowment Campaign’s purpose and goals. Chris Yuhasz ’05 (Co-Chair for the Alumni phase with Bill Lowery ‘01) informed us on what to expect during the Alumni phase of the campaign. Spearheaded by very generous commitments from the Leadership Akron Board members, and boosted by an $85,000 challenge grant ($1 for every $2 committed to by Alumni) from the GAR Foundation, we urge all alumni to support the Endowment Campaign as we work to accomplish the Alumni phase goal of over $150,000. LAAA committee chairs and members are hard at work developing programs of interest for you. A Community Issues luncheon – "Solutions for Reclaiming the Dream" – will be held October 29 at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. The Holiday Party will be held on December 10, including Class XXV members as our guests, also at the Foodbank. And remember the date for the Leadership Akron 25th Anniversary – September 24, 2009! Groups like LAAA are successful due to the efforts of many. Thank you to our officers, LAAA and Leadership Akron trustees, committee chairs and members, and you - the members who support the events. As we look forward to another great year, remember to reach out and reconnect with your class members, challenge yourself and others to attend one more event, support the Endowment Campaign and relish the difference your ongoing Leadership Akron experience makes in your life.
Community Issues ~ Solutions for
Reclaiming the Dream: A Discussion among Community Leaders, Oct.
29th, 11:30 a.m., Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Over a year of planning by Leadership Akron trustees and staff culminated on October 7 with the inaugural insight:AKRON program. Designed for top executives who are new to the Akron area, insight:AKRON provides an introduction to the community’s key assets, organizations, and leaders. A group of twenty local executives, spent the day learning about Akron from its top leaders. Highlights of the day included the following:
The day concluded with a reception at the Akron Art Museum where Leadership Akron trustees, alumni board members, and leaders from their employers welcomed the participants to our community. The program’s success was made possible by the design team of Leadership Akron trustees who shepherded the development of the program. These include Mary Beth Carroll (Cleveland ’01), Riley Lochridge ‘86, Dan Colantone ‘01, Michael Douglas ’98, and in particular, Jody Bacon ’92 who also served as the host and tour guide for the day. Having recognition in these two
categories should equalize Class recognition opportunities based on
a greater number of attendees having a better opportunity to win in
"the pounds of food" category, with lesser attendees still having
recognition through financial donation.
To our ingenious Leadership Akron Alumni, let's discuss turkeys -- although heavy, any frozen turkey cannot be out of refrigeration longer than 15 minutes!!! They are very difficult to bring, so let's remember each $10 donated provides a 10-12 lb. turkey for a family in need. There will be collection envelopes for cash and checks, as well as a credit card machine, to ensure financial donations are credited to the appropriate class. Likewise, food donations will be collected by the Foodbank staff so that we can announce our winner at 7:15 p.m. Please remember, this is a free party; thus, a great opportunity to give back to our community through the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Looking forward to seeing you!!!
JLA began it’s 22nd year September 14-15. Thirty-eight students from public and private area high schools in Summit County gathered September at Camp Y-Noah in which several of the students met for the first time. The two days proved to be very challenging because of experiencing high winds due to the remnants of Hurricane Ike. The students bonded as a group and learned to adapt to the activities even with no electricity. The following are comments from the students regarding their leadership experiences. "I learned that leadership is not always being in charge, it deals a lot more with relationships than public perception or use of force." "Leadership starts with trusting the people around you. Without trusting and believing in others, you can’t lead. " "You have to have good charisma and learn to cooperate well with others."
Leadership Akron’s Fall Retreat offered another excellent opportunity for classmates to get to know each other and begin to learn about the assets of their local community. Here are some thoughts from the Leadership Akron Class XXV. "I came away with a better sense of who my classmates are - and with my classmates having a better sense of who I am." "The retreat turned out to be informative, inspirational, challenging, and fun." "I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! Well organized, very good speakers, appropriate and necessary subject matter. " 2008 Northeast Ohio Athena Award sponsored by ATHENA International and Inside Business Magazine recognized five Leadership Akron alumni for their leadership and professional excellence. Leadership Akron alumni honorees include Vivian Celeste Neal ‘99, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; Marie Covington ‘85, Covington Communications Inc.; Laura Culp ‘94, Brockman, Coats, Gedelian & Co.; Ilene Shapiro ‘88 Summa Health System, and Chris Yuhasz ‘05, Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority.
