16 at the Hilton Akron-Fairlawn. by Dani A. Robbins, Class XXII This year’s Lunch with Leaders, held September 18, started normal enough with salad and chicken at Portage Country Club, and a go around the table sharing everything there is to tell about yourself in three minutes. Introductions lasted 20 minutes, which were the last vestiges of normal, even by Leadership Akron standards. We were then instructed to share two truths and an untruth. My tablemates claimed to have partied with Bob Marley, lived under an assumed name, studied to be certified as a hand writing analyst, been compared to the Mona Lisa, run over a date’s dog, hitchhiked up the East Coast, and spent three months with the Aborigines. And, Scott Read swears he was babysat by Jeffrey Dahmer while visiting a neighbor. You may be asking yourself: "Is any of
it true?" If you want to know, you should have come. You’d know the
truth, and spent the lunch hour laughing!

The following new leaders will be honored at this year’s New Community Leaders’ Reception:
by Megan Elavsky, Manchester High School This quote from Lance Secretan took on new meaning September 16-17, when thirty-four new Junior Leadership Akron students assembled at Camp Y-Noah. Presented with various tasks and challenges, all were determined to prove to themselves and each other their ability and strength. These leaders grew and reveled in each other’s knowledge. Blessed with skill and determination, the 2007-2008 Junior Leadership Akron class had an experience to last a lifetime. A strong sense of confidence, self-worth, teamwork, communication abilities, and compassion helped each individual complete a series of planned tasks. Upon arrival, the acquaintances played a few ice breaker games before diving into the challenges. The first day focused more on trust of one’s fellow peers. Divided into three teams, groups were faced with out-of-the-box tasks like a "pizza toss" and helium balloon drop. The low ropes course stressed the need for clear and concise words and actions when completing a project. Ending the day with a Dutch Auction and bonfire, our class of juniors from all around Summit county quickly developed a relationship that only JLA and Leadership Akron alums can fully appreciate. The second day was based more on pushing one’s own limits rather than the team’s. Alpine Tower and the swing tested our fears and comfort zones. Alpine Tower, a fifty foot structure, presented various paths to the top. Supported only by a thin rope, an individual had to override terror and stick to a specific goal. Though a few stopped along the way, shouts of encouragement echoed beneath. A strength inside blossomed as one accomplished his or her set limit. Though some were afraid, every student climbed the tower.
We closed our two-day retreat with a brief
discussion. Coming into the retreat, many admitted not knowing what
to expect. Yet, in the two day period we learned and developed as a
group and as individual leaders. It was an experience most of us
will not soon forget. As John C. Maxwell said: "You gain strength,
courage, and confidence by every experience. You must do the thing
that you think you cannot do." That defines a leader.
