Over 150 Leadership Akron graduates gathered at The University of
Akron’s Student Union in August to celebrate another successful year
for the Leadership Akron Alumni Association (LAAA). The highlight of
the meeting was the unveiling of a new logo that will serve
Leadership Akron, its alumni, and its junior program.
For 23 years, Leadership Akron had no logo but actually a font, a
unique typeface that communicated just the name of the organization.
Meanwhile, as LAAA and Junior Leadership Akron came into existence,
they developed their own logos that were totally different. The
efforts that culminated at the Annual Meeting was the creation of a
consistent look for all aspects of Leadership Akron. As a result,
all of us will have broader exposure and recognition in the
community.
The logo is latest in efforts of the Leadership Akron and LAAA
boards to create win-win situations by working more closely
together. A small working group convened members of both boards,
together with alumni that have expertise in marketing. The group
held two focused sessions, aided by the talents and facilitation of
TRIAD Communications. The result: a distinctive mark that will
signify all things Leadership Akron for years to come.
“We’ve been through this process with many organizations,” said Rick
Krochka, president of Triad. “This group’s teamwork and enthusiasm
enabled us to arrive at a great outcome in a condensed timeframe.”
The logo is the latest of TRIAD's contributions to Leadership Akron,
having re-formatted the Leaderline earlier in 2006.
For many years, Leadership Akron’s graduates have built our “brand”
through their accomplishments in the community. We know that the
achievements of our graduates will always be the most valuable
aspect of what Leadership Akron is known for. And we are proud to
enhance their contributions with a logo that symbolizes their
community spirit.

Sponsored by the Akron Community Foundation, The Leadership Akron
Orientation Retreat was a tremendously awesome, eye opening
experience, like no other, an experience in itself.
Below are the aspects of the Retreat that will stay with me:
-
An opportunity to get to know all the
magnificent people who make up the Class XXIII and what makes
each of them tick.
-
An opportunity to reflect on the
people who made an impact on Akron’s history. The success of
Akron today can be directly attributed to the successful leaders
of yesterday.
-
An opportunity to gain first-hand
knowledge of extremely brilliant officials in our community and
reflect on future issues facing a flourishing Akron, Ohio.
-
An opportunity to catch a glance of
what is in store for the Class XXIII and what awe-inspiring
leaders have gone before us.
The Leadership Akron Orientation Retreat was all this and more!

On September 12, alumni that help coordinate Leadership Akron’s
program days came together to discuss program priorities and best
practices. Michael Douglas ’98 shared the board’s
encouragement to infuse a renewed emphasis on community service into
the program days. Charlene Reed ’06 of Kent State University
gave an overview of working with adult learners and offered some
tips to make program days more engaging. Some tips that might be
useful for anyone working with groups of adult learners:
-
Use small groups, even for short
periods, to answer a question or consider a problem.
-
Pause during program and ask people to
write two sentences about what they’ve learned so far.
-
“Pair-Share”—Pose a problem, have
individuals think about it alone, discuss with another, then
share with broader group.
In keeping with their excellence in transportation and their
community commitment, sister companies Roadway Express and YRC
Regional are now Leadership Akron’s transportation sponsor. With
their support, Leadership Akron will continue to offer a top-notch
program that exposes class members to the many unique locations in
our community. Many thanks to CEO’s Mike Smid of Roadway Express and
Jim Staley of YRC Regional, as well as YRC Vice President Brad
Schroeder ’06, all of whom were instrumental in this
opportunity.

High School

John Maxwell stated in his book that "leadership is influence -
nothing more, nothing less." The influence that the 35 young men and
women from Junior Leadership Akron currently and will continue to
have on this world is immeasurable and astonishing. When you group
together young people that hold qualities of character, charisma,
courage, motivation, and dedication, among other qualities you can’t
go wrong. We each had our own style and our own personality but we
all worked together to accomplish whatever task was thrown our way.
I feel safe to say that every single person involved in this
prestigious program will make a positive impact in society as they
follow their own footsteps to their personal goals, that I have no
doubt will all be accomplished.
The retreat at Camp-Y-Noah started with students from different high
schools, but it did not take long to blend the students into one
unit. The ice breaking activities could not have gone better, and if
a stranger would of walked in they would of thought we all knew each
other since kindergarten. We set aside the typical high school
attitude and decided to treat each and every person with respect
because we all knew it would make the experience worthwhile.
The activities:
-
Challenged our communication, team
working and problem solving skills. We would do certain
activities where only one person could talk, or we had no verbal
communication, or had activities with time limits.
-
Educated us on how to work together
with team building activities that challenged our mind as well
as our communication skills and trust with people that we just
met. My favorite activity was the log activity. We had to
fit logs into stumps by figuring out what log when in what stump
and then forming a pattern. Without communicating, we had to
make sure that everyone in our group got across without falling.
If anybody fell, we would have to begin the exercise again.
-
Encouraged our self motivation and
self limitation skills. We climbed the Alpine Tower and went on
a very high swing. A great deal of this exercise was about
personal motivation. We encouraged our teammates to get through
this challenging exercise. It showed us that if we all work
together we can accomplish anything.
I would not trade going to the retreat for anything. I learned so
many things throughout the retreat like always listening to other
people's ideas, treat one another with respect, and if you take that
extra step and step outside your comfort zone the things you learn
are amazing. I couldn't be any happier with my class and I'm looking
forward to what this year has to offer.
