By  Charlene Corlett, Leadership Stark County '94

After attending LAAA’s Lunch with Leaders program in January, I reviewed my notes and looked for a common thread. As I circled reappearing themes, I was surprised to find that the word "care" appeared in my notes for all four speakers.

Dan Colantone ’01 suggested that we should "care enough about our employees" to help them turn weaknesses into strengths. Bernett Williams ’99 said that her son asked her to add his activities in her calendar, not as a reminder, but rather as a symbol that she "cared to include him" in her world of work. Riley Lochridge ’86 mentioned some attributes of a "caring boss", and Bill Lowery ‘01 concluded with a quote that suggested the definition of leadership is the same now as it was for the cave-dweller – a leader is still around to "care about others" in spite of pending crisis.

In this discussion on business leadership, I heard words that I expected: leaders have vision; they are innovative and inspirational. But I was pleasantly surprised to hear our speakers all remind us that leaders also take time to care for others. While I’m not likely to write "be more visionary" on my to-do list, I will remember that an extra dose of care and compassion can enhance our ability to manage and direct business as well as personal relationships, and can be a powerful tool for sharpening our overall leadership abilities.

Before we know it, the weather will be warm again and Leadership Akron’s 2007-2008 Class 24 will be getting started. Right now, we’re on the lookout for prospective candidates who demonstrate leadership capabilities and community commitment. Chances are, you have at least one colleague, client, vendor, friend, or neighbor who would fit the bill. You can nominate them at www.lakron.com/4-nominate.htm.

By  Scott Read '03, 2005 Distinguished Leader Awardee

Akron attorney Bruce Hunsicker '93 has   earned LAAA’s 2007 Distinguished Leader Award. Each    year, a committee of past award-winners selects  the recipient for outstanding achievement in the   community related to a specific cause or project.

Hunsicker, 52, an attorney in the Akron office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, was chosen for his work to found and fund the One-in-Six Foundation. The One-in-Six Foundation (OneInSix.org) is named to reflect the fact that one in six men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

In 2004, Hunsicker was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While Hunsicker continues to vigorously practice law, his struggle with cancer led him to mount an aggressive campaign to educate men about prostate cancer.

He has set a goal of raising $1 million, which is to be used to educate men about prostate screenings and to also help finance prostate research at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Thus far, Hunsicker and his organization have raised about $200,000 toward that goal. "I’m not crazy about winning an award by virtue of being sick," said Hunsicker, who is candid and practical in discussions about his malady. "But I see this as an opportunity to spread the word about this disease."

Hunsicker said there is not sufficient emphasis nationally about prostate cancer, and that many men don’t realize that it can be detected early through a simple blood test called a PSA. Marc Merklin '98, Distinguished Leader Award 2004 winner and selection committee chair said “Bruce has really gone above and beyond what you would normally expect someone in his situation to do, and that’s a mark of leadership. He’s not only fought the battle for himself and his family, but he’s also taken the battle against prostate cancer to the community level. That exemplifies the spirit of what Leadership Akron is all about.”

F. Daniel Balmert, partner in charge of the Akron office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, said “Strength of character and strength of purpose define great leaders like Bruce. I’m proud to be associated with such a fine person who is an exemplary credit to his family, firm and community.”

Hunsicker and his wife Laura, who have two sons, live in Akron.

History/Culture Day was on December 12. Here were the highlights of our day:

  • Akron Zoo - We saw Komodo Dragons, Penguins and Jaguars. Pat Waickman ’98, Senior Vice President and General Manager, explained that the Zoo plays an active role in several conservation projects by committing funds, staff time and exhibit space to support these efforts.

  • Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail – Bridget Garvin, Executive Director, had a discussion in the Mustill Store and Towpath volunteers took us on a brief walk down the Towpath trail.

  • Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens – Susan Van Vorst ’01, Foundation President & Vice President of Development and Ben Bisbee, Volunteer Services Coordinator took us into certain rooms of this enchanting house. I enjoyed hearing about the manor’s history and was impressed with the unique architecture and exquisite furnishings.

  • Lock 3 – John Miller, Director of Archival Services, The University of Akron and Michael Cohill ’94, Tournament Director, The American Toy Marble Museum gave an enjoyable tour of the German Village, Marble Museum and airship and blimp maps sponsored by Lighter-Than-Air Society.

  • The University of Akron Student Union – The Akron Art Museum sponsored an activity where our group used different art materials to create a collage of LeBron James.

  • The University of Akron Pan African Cultural Center – Coleen Daniels Curry ‘06, Director, Academic Achievement Programs conducted the tour. I learned that the center is a great resource for those interested in Akron’s African-American past. I was impressed with the different services offered to help promote students’ awareness of the African-American community.

  • E.J. Thomas Hall – We ended the day on a high note, composing a song using whistles, recorders and drums with Matthew Kraemer, Conductor, Akron Youth Symphony.

  Lochridge: Executive of the Year

Leadership Akron was proud to see our Vice Chair Riley Lochridge ‘86 receive the Executive of the Year award last night from SMEI. As Chairman & CEO of ComDoc, Inc., Lochridge has long emphasized servant leadership as he has approached the business as a laboratory for the personal development of employees. Along the way, ComDoc has grown to become the largest dealer of Ricoh copiers and business machines in the nation. Since Lochridge assumed the helm, company revenue has increased eight-fold and share value a whopping 4,000 percent.

A graduate of Leadership Akron’s second class, Lochridge has served the program and the Alumni Association in many ways, including the establishment of LAAA’s Ellen McIntyre Memorial Golf Outing. At the SMEI Awards Dinner, Lochridge shared insights on leadership that echoed what he shared with the current Class 23 at their opening retreat:

"If you find yourself going through tough times, don’t as ‘Why me?’, ask yourself ‘How can I learn from this situation?’"

"Celebrate the gap between who you are and what you are in the process of becoming."
