Session on Cutting Edge Technology Focuses on New Productsby Louwana Oliva ‘00 The May 15 session on technology took
advantage of the fact that a nationwide security conference was
being held that weekend here in the City of Akron. Security
experts and inventors from across the country gave attendees the
opportunity to hear about new ways to protect data and people.
Rick Shaw, founder and CEO of Awareity described his knowledge management product that secures data files in secure “filing cabinets” only allowing those who have clearance to open the file drawer and examine the contents Allan Hug, president and CEO of InnerGuide Technologies offers a product that digitally links building blue prints with digital images, and when possible real time video, for incident control by local first responders. The product is given free of charge to 911 authorities. Finally, Michael McKibben, Chairman of Leader Technologies, gave the audience a bird’s eye view of how his integrated security platform for voice and data systems located in Columbus, Ohio was the backbone of all communications in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. Lessons learned were that the simplest systems work the best in crisis situations. High tech methods failed quickly, and most people reverted to systems they already understood – cell phones. His message to the group was that disasters bring out the best in human nature. Kudos to Tim Dimoff (XIV) and Christine Curry (XXIV) for organizing a thought-provoking session.
