Junior Leadership Akron

Class XXII Retreat at Camp Y-Noah

Junior Leadership Akron
is a non-profit program of Leadership Akron Alumni Association. It is modeled after LEADERSHIP AKRON, and is generously funded by Time Warner Cable, NE Ohio Division.

The program provides leadership training to high school juniors from both public and private schools in the Greater Akron Region. Through exposure to a nine-month curriculum of highly structured activities, participants become familiar with current issues, community resources, and other factors influencing the direction of Akron's future. Included in each month's activities is a focus on leadership training.

THE GOALS

  • Teach students about community resources
  • Provide leadership training and practice leadership roles
  • Increase self-awareness and self-confidence
  • Develop a sense of concern for the welfare of others
  • Challenge students to participate in school and community service.

THE PROGRAM

The program begins in September with an overnight retreat where participants are introduced to the objectives of Junior Leadership Akron. The retreat also allows students to meet each other and learn how to use their leadership skills to work together.

From October through April, the class is involved in a series of interactive, hands-on activities which take place one day a month from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Participants have the opportunity to meet community leaders and visit major businesses, government and health facilities while learning first-hand how our community works and how youth leadership can make a difference. The culmination of the program is the graduation ceremony in May.
