In Leadership Akron’s fifteenth year, the
Board of Trustees determined that the success of the program merited a
look at how the program would sustain itself for the next fifteen years.
A Financial Task Force, chaired by Rick
Fedorovich, was appointed and after nine months of study, the Task Force
recommended to the Board of Trustees that an Endowment Fund be created
for Leadership Akron’s future financial security.
It was also determined that the Endowment
Fund campaign would be the full responsibility of the Leadership Akron
“family” – trustees and alumni. From its inception, the founders of
Leadership Akron knew that the program could not exist without corporate
and foundation support. The cost of the program has always been more
than two times that of the tuition. For the program to be available to
all citizens meeting the selection criteria, it was necessary for the
program to depend on corporate and foundation support. In appreciation
and respect for the corporate support we have had from the beginning,
the trustees and alumni accepted the full challenge of building the
Endowment Fund.
In 1999, following the incorporation of the
program, the Endowment Fund was initiated. Two campaigns were launched:
The Trustee Campaign and the Alumni Campaign.
The overall co-chairmen of the campaign were
Roger Read and Phil Maynard. The chairmen of the Alumni Campaign were
David and Cheryl Venarge.
In just six years, we have raised more than $500,000 and we are very proud of that accomplishment. In addition, the
following foundations generously supported the Leadership Akron
Endowment Fund: The GAR Foundation with a $ 75,000 grant and a $100,000
matching grant; the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation with a
$40,000 grant, the Lehner Family Foundation Trust with a $20,000 grant,
the Sisler-McFawn Foundation with a $10,000 grant and the Kenneth L.
Calhoun Charitable Trust with a grant of $1,500.
Without the generosity of so many, it would
not have been possible to have met such a major goal. The generosity of
the trustees, the alumni members and foundations continues to encourage
and inspire us all.
We continue to grow the Endowment Fund for
the future. Gifts made to the Leadership Akron Endowment Fund are
welcome. Please remember the Leadership Akron Endowment Fund when you
are considering memorial and tribute gifts.
